Get to know the team behind the brand. We’re sitting down with members of our team to learn more about their role at Law Squared, their personal pursuits, and what makes them a Law Squared-ite!

This week, meet Commercial lawyer, Connor Gentile, from our Brisbane office.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

Hi! I’m Connor, a commercial lawyer here in the Brisbane office. I’m generally an extrovert at heart and enjoy being around good people. I live with my partner in Brisbane’s north, love being outdoors and enjoy exercise.

I’m grew up in a big family and have an identical twin brother, so if you’re around Brisbane and say hello to me (or who you think is me), please don’t be offended if I have a blank look on my face!

In my spare time I enjoy going on hikes, drinking coffee, patting dogs and coaching club rugby union. I’m also an avid reader of the Australian Financial Review and keep a close eye on the markets.

Tell us about your career journey so far and what led you to Law Squared

During my time at university, I developed a passion for learning how to become a trusted commercial and legal advisor to business but wasn’t sure which sector or industry I wanted to focus on.

Prior to joining Law Squared, I completed a graduate program at a mid-tier firm and gained experience in projects approvals, corporate advisory and property and finance. After developing a good foundation of legal skills and practice, I decided it was time to pursue a new role where I could utilise my interpersonal skills to not only establish good relationships with clients, but also engage in business development from the get go. When the opportunity at Law Squared presented itself, I decided to grab it with both hands and try a new way of practicing law.

Connor joined Law Squared’s commercial team in October 2022.

Tell us about some of the clients you work with and the type of work you do at Law Squared

The Commercial team at Law Squared works with clients across a broad range of industries. We specialise in providing advice in relation to privacy and IP, data, competition and consumer matters, property leasing, financial services regulation and compliance, and general commercial document drafting and negotiations.

During my time at the firm, I’ve been lucky to have the opportunity to work a range of clients from small start-ups to multinational technology companies. For example, a typical workday might include drafting, reviewing and negotiating various agreements in relation to supply of goods, confidentiality, licensing, partnering, services, energy supply or terms and conditions. In conducting our work, our team focuses on creating value for businesses, whether large or small, and assisting them at every stage of the process. As a newer member of a fast growing firm, I am excited at the prospect of having a front row seat to help grow this dynamic business.

Tell us about the Law Squared difference. What makes Law Squared standout from the traditional law firms around the country and the world?

The Brisbane team have wasted no time demonstrating how we live and breathe our values and business model. Law Squared stands out because it ultimately approaches the practice of law differently. The firm aims to provide team members with the best opportunity to learn, grow and practice, without the conventional constraints of conventional time-based KPIs or structural limitations.

For its lawyers, the firm’s flat structure and value-based billing system provides an immersive experience where the focus is on creating value and outcomes for clients, instead of nominal internal KPIs. As a result, typical productivity and administrative restrictions placed on team members are done away with, leaving us more time to focus on business and team development.

From a client perspective, the firm’s focus on establishing genuine relationships with clients to help them grow and navigate the complex business landscape, rather than taking a purely transactional view, is fundamental to Law Squared’s unique and alternative presence in the legal services market.

Outside of work, what do you love to do, and where would we find you?

Outside of work, I thoroughly enjoy hiking mountain trails (although I don’t actually own any hiking gear), being outdoors and exercising. During the rugby season, I’m an assistant coach/manager of a Colts rugby union team which is always a blast.

Spending time with my friends and family, including my little nieces and nephews, is also something that I look forward to!
